SxPF – Newsletter Winter 2018/19

Dear Member Clubs

So we are coming to the end of an interesting and challenging year for SxPF, in which we have re-established a new committee and got back on track with a successful PDI Championship in November. Thank you, everyone, for your support.

Back in the Summer we promised to put our attention to the following as a priority:

  1. Re-establish the core website and social media links
Thanks firstly to Andy Conway and Niall Teskey, we have a clean and efficient new look to the site. We are continuing to make use of social media, with interest in the Facebook page increasing.
  2. Run a workshop early in the new season for Programme / Competition Secretaries
Slightly later than planned, there is a Workshop planned for 16th February, for which an Invitation is attached.
  3. Run the PDI Championship as planned in November.
The Championship was one of the most successful yet, with Mid Sussex CC running out winners in the single Open class.
  4. Rebuild our directories for Judges and Speakers
We will be using the 16th February workshop as the launch vehicle for this.

More on all of these in this newsletter. Plus:

  • Report on the 2018 PDI Championship
  • Advance news of the Print Championship with a call for Display Stands

2018 PDI Championship

The PDI Championship held on 17th November proved to be a great success. Your response was very pleasing too, with good feedback on all aspects, save for one or two issues with parking at the venue.

Our three assessors – Walter Benzie, Roy Lambeth and Sue Sibley – enjoyed 180 images of high quality, with Mid Sussex CC coming out winners by just three marks from Steyning CC, with partner club Seven Sisters in third place. 618 is one of the highest twelve-image totals we have seen. Taking the Most Improved club award was Middleton CC. Best image was awarded to Graham Deacon from Seven Sisters for his image entitled “Sunshine Umbrella”, scoring 57 marks. Well done to all participating clubs and photographers for a great show.

We continue to work to attract sponsorship to the event. With attendance from Longridge, CameraCal and Marrutt, and prizes donated by them plus British Wildlife Centre and Orchard Frames, there was a good commercial presence.

For their contribution to that and brilliantly organised support on the day, special mention must go to Mandy Willard and the team at Seven Sisters Camera Club. The partner club concept we hope continues to give back something to clubs in return for the invaluable help afforded.

Image Eligibility

In our post Championship review, we did become aware of three images that appeared to infringe rule 3.1, which states that:

An image is not eligible if it has been entered as substantially the same image in any previous SxPF competition as a print or slide or projected digital image (PDI), irrespective of the image title.

The committee agreed that in one case the image was identical to a previous image, a second was substantially the same as a previous image  and the third was similar but not substantially the same. The marks awarded in the first two cases have been discounted and the clubs advised.

Print Championship 2019

The Print Championship makes a welcome return for 2019. The date is Saturday 6th April, and your invitation to participate is attached here. We will be partnered by Crawley Camera Club.

As usual we will be setting up an exhibition on 5th April. For that we rely on the loan of display stands from member clubs. Entry space is anticipated to be in the region of 180 prints.

If you are willing to lend print stands and to be available for a couple of hours on 5th April to deliver and set up, we would be enormously grateful. The exhibition cannot happen without your support on this. Please confirm when returning your intention to participate; Thank you.

Please also advise who your principal contact is for the championship, as we will need to create your account for uploading PDI equivalent images via the Photo Entry System and for coordinating the loan of stands.

Website and Social Media

You will have noticed, we’re sure, the new clean design for the website, set up by Andy Conway and Niall Teskey. We are keen to make you aware that you can use the website for promoting club events such as Exhibitions and special Open lectures. There are two routes:

  • You can post your link and media directly to our Facebook page
  • You can send a .jpg poster and link to either or for inclusion under the Club Events list on the main website.

Please do take advantage of this. Especially as we will no longer be circulating publicity of club events by ad-hoc email.

Clubs Workshop 16th February

The clubs workshop on 16th February will be held at Wivelsfield and is aimed at Programme and Competition Secretaries. There are several purposes:

  • To invite you to share best practice with regard to booking judges and speakers
  • To share issues experienced in accessing information via directories and to explore what you need from a new set of directories.
  • To invite you to share your best speakers and judges with other clubs
  • To begin to explore who would be willing to run workshops

An invitation is attached here. We are inviting up to three attendees from each club.

Dates for 2019 – 2020

  • AGM and Forum – 18 May 2019
  • PDI Championship – 16 November 2019 (provisional)
